Should You Wash Your Hair Twice?

Does your hair quickly turn greasy a day or two after washing it? If so, you probably wash your hair often, or even daily, to remedy the issue. However, the answer may lie within one simple phrase: lather, rinse, repeat.

Repeat is key because as it turns out washing your hair twice might be good for it! While every hair type has different needs and this technique isn’t for everyone, there are significant benefits to doing so.

According to hairstylist Sal Salcedo, who spoke with Byrdie, shampooing twice can prevent your hair from oiling up quickly.

“Shampooing your hair twice is beneficial because it allows for proper cleansing, giving you longer periods of time with a clean scalp and keeping away the oily hair problem,” said Salcedo. “It also keeps you away from over-shampooing your hair, which is a mistake that most women make.”

This is because the first shampoo application breaks down the oils in your hair, and the second shampoo completely and thoroughly washes the hair. So instead of washing your hair every day, wash it twice in one shower so you can go longer without shampooing it again.

If you have textured hair, you may still benefit from shampooing twice, especially if you only wash it once a week and use many hair products. However, one shampoo application should be enough for those with extra dry hair or who don’t experience major buildup.

Remember, everyone is different, so what works for some may not work for others. However, give it a try the next time you come face-to-face with hair wash day, and see just how fresh your hair feels!
