When you think about rice, you probably think about a delicious side dish or your favorite rice-based dinner. Sure, rice can have great benefits when consumed, but what if we told you that rice is good for your skin?

Rice has become a common skin care ingredient, and skin care brands are harnessing its power to bring you brighter, more glowing skin.

So how exactly are skin care brands using rice in their formulations? Well, first,  they aren’t exactly doing something new. Rice and rice water have been used in Southeast Asian cultures for centuries. Brands are simply taking centuries of beauty treatments and crafting products.

So how can rice help the skin? Elle UK spoke with CJ Zhan-Shahani, founder of Forest Rhapsody Skincare, about the use of rice in cosmetic formulations. Zhan-Shahni, whose own brand uses rice in its formulations, explained that rice is partially composed of protein, and when applied to the skin, it forms a moisturizing and conditioning layer.

Rice bran extract is also full of antioxidants and fatty acids, and those antioxidants can help prevent free radical damage. Blending moisturization with anti-inflammatory benefits, rice bran becomes a path to more glowy, healthy skin.

If you’re looking to start incorporating rice into your skin care, one cult classic product might be the way to go. Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant is an internet-famous daily exfoliant that promises brighter skin, and it’s partially thanks to rice bran.

The exfoliant begins as a powder that you place into your palm before using water to create a foaming wash. Once activated with water, the rice-based powder releases rice enzymes that help to exfoliate the skin with phytic acid. Ultimately, the exfoliating powder will lead to brighter, more even skin.

Plus, even those with sensitive skin can use the exfoliant. Thanks to the inclusion of colloidal oatmeal and allantoin, it can calm as it works.

If you’re wanting to try something new with your skin care you make the transition into a fall routine, adding a rice-based product might be the way to go.
